The fourth day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Africa started off with David Tlale’s show and as always David had to be different, with his show being held outdoors outside the “The Creative Counsel” building in Melrose. The collection was inspired by women who are not afraid to be feminine, bold and still command attention.

The AFI Fasttrack winners showcased their Capsule collections. Jessica Ross’s collection was inspired by Russian orthodox churches and the rich, luxuriant colours with which they are filled. Exterior as well interior architecture provided inspiration. Her collection was simply yet elegant.

Naazneen Kagee is a graduate of the Cape Town College of Fashion Design, was inspired by traditional Russian dress. It incorporates various textures to create rich, opulent garments, without compromising on simplicity. I love that her collection has a sporty feel to it and it can easily be worn anywhere.

Oath by Rich Mnisi was derived from a still in the movie, Dark Shadows. The whole theme of the collection is captured through this still and there are with dark and quirky themes at play. This allows
Rich to introduce his seemingly paradoxical concept of minimal “maximalism”, Rich made sport look cool to me and I could definitely see myself in all of his garments. I think its safe to say that his collection is on of my favourites. I hope to own an Oath by Rich Mnisi soon. Saving for it.

Tuelo Nguyuza is a Pretorian Designer whose colection was inspired by the deep, rich colours and earth tones of the Sahara Desert, with its various subtropical elements. A combination of the old and the new, this collection reflects various desert landscapes whilst echoing scenes from sci-fi films for an
“earthy” feel mixed with a modern edge to create the label’s signature, sports luxe aesthetic.

Murade
“Twenty-Four Hours in Mumbai”, Murade’s Spring/ Summer 2014/15 Collection, was chiefly inspired by the rich, diverse colours of Indian spices. The remaining elements – such as texture and structure – are all influenced by this colour inspiration.

1981 by Nana Brenu
1981 will present “CHIAROSCURO”, a collection initially inspired by the sight of a sunset over Johannesburg and its contrasting light and shadows, created by the last golden rays touching the
surrounding landscape and buildings. This dramatic scene set the tone for the collection and, in particular, inspired the use of prints therein. Similarly, colours were inspired by the African dawn and sunset. Silhouettes explore the contrast between volumes, drawing inspiration from the traditional dress of northern Ghana

Maxhosa by Laduma
The collection is a celebration of three years of challenges and great success in times of
uncertainty. It will combine signature patterns and colours from past collections while introducing new elements. Laduma’s collection was unique and different from what we have seen on the runway. The patterns were absolutely amazing.
